2009 Gator Bowl:
Clemson Tigers vs Nebraska Cornhuskers
Next year (2009), get yourself a big break to watch one of the oldest college football bowls, the Gator Bowl. The 2009 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl will be played at the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on January 1st. As the name implies, the Japanese imaging equipment company Konica Minolta is the bowl’s current main sponsor. Konica Minolta produces cameras, lenses, photocopiers, printers, medical imaging equipment, measuring instruments and other optical devices.
The Gator Bowl Association manages the bowl’s operation. To underwrite the first Gator bowl game, Charles Hilty Sr. and his friends Ray McCarthy, W.C. Ivey and Maurice Cherry raised $10,000. The success of the venture was felt in 1948 as massive crowd were drawn to the games. The crowd’s number reached a peak level of as much as 70,000 by 1970. Its old home, the Gator Bowl Stadium (formerly Fairfield Stadium in the 1940’s) has been expanded through the years to accommodate more people until it was demolished in 1993 to pave way to the construction of a big stadium in the same site. Due to its potential as a crowd drawer, Gator Bowl was moved to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium with a much larger seating capacity.
Teams featured in the Gator Bowl include the Big 12, Notre Dame, Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big East. Brace yourself for another great college football experience.
